Are you starting League of Legends and you don't know which champion to start with? This ranking is built on a simple criterion: the champion must be strong even when you make mistakes. Because initially, you will — and that’s normal.
Garen is the universal advice for beginners, and there's a reason for that. His Q Judgment silences and speeds up. His E Spin to Win does damage in the area around him without skillshot. His Noxian Guillotine ult automatically detects when an enemy is low enough to be executed. He has passive life regeneration which allows him to stay in lane without potions. He has no mana. The only real skill to develop with him is knowing when to engage and when to flee — and that's fundamental to the entire game. Ashe is the best starting ADC: his Frost Arrow ult is a very long-range skillshot that stuns, but with practice it becomes natural. His W Flight of arrows permanently slows down the enemies you attack. It's slow and has no mobility, so it teaches you how to position yourself correctly.
Annie is perfect for players who want to play mage without too much complexity: her stun triggers automatically on the 4th spell, her R summons Tibbers instantly, and her damage is among the highest in the game for such a simple kit. Amumu is probably the champion that makes the most difference in teamfights for the amount of effort invested: his ult entangles the entire opposing team. Warwick is perfect in the jungle with his W which guides him towards injured enemies and his life regeneration which allows him to stay in the jungle without returning to base.
What you should really avoid when starting out: Zed requires you to master a 3-key combo in less than a second with perfect timing. Aphelios manages 6 different weapons with cross interactions. Riven has a spell cancel loop that requires 200 hours minimum to master. Start with simple champions, build your bases, and gradually move up.
S-Tier: the picks that hurt
Garen, Ashe, Annie, Miss Fortune, Amumu, Warwick, Malphite are clearly above the rest at the moment. If you want to win games without too much hassle, start there.
D-Tier: to avoid in ranked
Zed, Aphelios, Riven, Kalista, Azir, Gangplank, Nidalee. Not necessarily bad in themselves, just not adapted to the current meta. For normal games, no problem.
